When do you use a bolt lock?
Bolt interlocks are used for mechanical locking of isolating switches and valves in the closed or open position. An interlock system using bolt locks are a simple economic alternative to safety switches for upgrading the safety level of existing machinery.
The released key can be used as a personal safety key or as an access key to open access point of the isolated machine.
How does a bolt lock work?
A bolt lock works by fully mechanically "firing" or "retracting" a pin when turning and removing the key. Different sequences of the locks are possible depending on the number of lock mechanisms and the application.
Single bolt lock
- Key unlocked = Pin fired
- Key locked = Pin fired
Double bolt lock
- 1st key unlocked + 2nd key unlocked = pin fired
- 1st key locked + 2nd key locked = pin fired
- 1st key locked + 2nd key unlocked = pin fired
- 1st key unlocked + 2nd key locked = pin fired
The released coded keys can then be used as a safety key or to gain access to the isolated machine using a door lock.
Bolt locks can easily be used for the following applications:
- Prevent simultaneous switching of power supply
- Preventing the simultaneous opening of shut-off valves or ball valves
- Locking of overhead lines or track sections
- Locking valves and ball valves in the closed or open position
- Locking of main power switches in "off" position
- Enforced lockout tagout (LOTO) for locking vital energy sources during maintenance
The features of a bolt lock
Released keys can be used to open or lock other energy sources. They can additionally be used to open safety devices such as doors, hatches or flaps.
The Fortress Interlocks CL lock mechanism which is used in all our bolt locks can be produced in 200,000 unique keycodes which are stored together with a personal laser engraving on the end-user to exclude duplicate key issuance.
Bolt locks cannot / should not be used for locking safety devices. Bolt locks cannot guarantee that the doors are locked (since no actuator is used).
